Diatomaceous Earth, "DE"
We use a "freshwater food-grade" DE in the kennel yard
for flea, tick and ant control. Once a month we dust the kennel yard with DE. However, there are a few precautions you
need to take.
DO NOT dust the yard on a windy day. You need a calm day to dust properly.
DO NOT dust while your dogs are in the yard. You do not want your dogs to breath in
the DE dust in the air.
You need to wear a mask while spreading the DE.
We use the handle type fine
screen strainer and a two gallon plastic mop bucket to spread the DE over the yard. You want to spread a very fine layer of
DE over the entire yard. For ant beds, knock the mound over and pour a moderate amount of DE on the bed.
We get
our freshwater food-grade DE from the Internet Grocer. We order the 50lb. bag.
Mosquito Control
We use a high concentrate of garlic juice to
battle mosquito's, fleas, ticks, flies and other flying insects. We spray every other week during dry times and more
often during rainy times. We spray the ground, under decks and porches up in trees, tree trunks and bushes.
The
mixture is 6 oz. to 8 oz. of garlic concentrate per 1 gallon of water in a portable garden sprayer. Also mix in 2 table spoons
of dish washing liquid. This will help the mixture to adhere to leaves on the trees and bushes. If you have standing water
mix in some canola oil into the mixture. This will form a film over the standing water to kill mosquito eggs before hatching.
We get the garlic concentrate from Mosquito Barrier on line.
Weed Control
For weeds around the kennel yard, fence line and around the kennel we use a mixture
of white vinegar and table salt. Mixing 1 gallon of white vinegar, one box or 26 oz. of table salt and 2 table spoons of dish
washing liquid until salt is dissolved and use a portable garden sprayer.
Once sprayed on weeds you will see them
starting to wilt within a few hours and totaly dead in 48 hours.
Saint Bernard Health
Ear Problems
Blue Powder Ear Treatment
16 oz. Isopropyl Alcohol (60
percent) 4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder 16 Drops
Gentian Violet Solution (1 percent)
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well. You will also need to shake solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder. To use, purchase
the "Clairol" type plastic bottle or a small baby ear syringe bottle to dispense solution to affected ears. TREATMENT: Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if very inflamed and sore do not attempt
to pull hair or clean out ear at all.
Wait until inflammation has subsided which will be about 2 days.
Shake the bottle each time before using.
Put cotton balls or similar absorbent material under the ear.
Flood the ear with solution, (gently squirt bottle), massage gently to the count of 60, wipe with a tissue.
Flood again on first treatment, wipe with a tissue and leave alone without massage. The dog will shake out the excess
which can be wiped with a tissue, cotton ball, etc as the Gentian Violet does stain fabrics. The SCHEDULE of treatment is as follows:
Treat 2x per day for
the first week to two weeks depending upon severity of ears
Treat 1x per day for the next 1-2 weeks
Treat 1x per month (or even less frequently, depending on the dog)
All of these ingredients should be available
at a pharmacy.
Others have found that despite the alcohol, the dog will not object to even the first treatment.
The Boric Acid Powder soothes the ear. The Gentian Violet Solution is an anti-infection agent. The solution appears to work
well on any and all ear problems from mites to wax to canker. After
the 2nd or 3rd day you can clean out the ear with a Q- tip or cotton balls. The success rate for this treatment is 95-99%. Dogs on the verge of ear canal surgery have been returned to normal with only the regular
follow-up treatment to keep the ear healthy. If an infection seems to be remaining in the treated ear after the above course
of treatment, you may also have some Pseudomonas bacteria in the site. This can be eradicated by using a gentle flush of raw
apple cider vinegar and water(warm) . Use 2 Tablespoons of vinegar to one cup of water, 2 x per week.
They
have found the Blue Powder Solution to be effective for treating fungus-type infections on the feet and elsewhere on the dog,
for cuts on dogs or people, and for hot spots. Remember it is for external use only ..so
be careful not to get into the eyes.
Colloidal
Silver
Colloidal Silver is a gift for people like us who use holistic and natural products
to care for our Saints. Colloidal Silver is for topical use on: Cuts, Scrapes, Open Sores, Ear Infections, Fungus, Itchy Areas,
Hot Spots, Mosuito Bites, Burns, Parasitic Infections (viral and fungal), Ringworm, Dermatitis, Infections, Inflammations,
Virus (all forms), Yeast Infections and many other problems. It is a Natural Alternative to Antibiotics and is Non Toxic.
Honey
Start by coarsely chopping
enough fresh lemon balm, thyme, sage, oregano, lavender, basil, or other herbs to loosely fill a glass jar. Alternatively,
fill the jar half full with loosely packed dried herbs. Fill the jar with honey, covering the herbs. If the honey is too thick
to pour easily, warm it by placing the honey jar in hot water or heat the honey gently in a saucepan or double boiler just
until it is liquid. Seal the jar of herbs and honey and leave it in a warm location, such as a sunny window, for at least
two weeks.
Honey infused with the herbs
mentioned above is an effective dressing for cuts, surgical wounds, burns, lick granulomas abrasions, hot spots, and infected
wounds. It can be given orally to prevent infection from viruses or bacteria, soothe a sore throat, help an anxious dog relax,
improve sleep, and speed recovery from illness. Added to food, herbal honey helps reduce gas and other symptoms of indigestion.
Before using herbal honey, filter it through cheesecloth or a strainer to remove plant material and store it at room temperature
or in the refrigerator. Add the medicated honey to your dog’s food.
Constipation
and Diarrhea
If your dog is constipated or has loose poop, a great remedy is Pumpkin. Thats
right, the same can pumpkin you buy off the shelf at the market is what you can use. As for pumpkins themselves, they are
just plain good for your dog. Pumpkin is low in fat, low in calories, loaded with vitamins and just plain good. Pumpkins
are rich in Vitamin A and potassium. They are also high in fiber. Give your dog some pumpkin off the spoon a couple times
a day or mix with their food until the problem takes care of itself. Dogs like the taste of pumpkin.
Females in Heat
For those of us who have
a female Saint and a male Saint in our home or male dogs in the area, the heat cycle can be challenging at best. Male
Saints (or any other breed) stop eating and sleeping during the heat cycle. We use chlorophyll in the tablet form to minimize
the scent that is emitted by the female through her urine. Chlorophyll may help improve immune response, but it's
best feature is that it deodorizes a dog (and her "droppings and urine") in a completely natural way. If started
early enough, it will mask her seasonal oder from you male through MOST of the heat cycle. CAUTION, THIS DOES NOT KEEP YOU
FEMALE FROM GETTING PREGNANT! Don't be alarmed when you see green poop. This is from the Chlorophyll.
